Why automatic doors are important for Hospitals

Automatic doors make a real difference in healthcare, helping to control infections, make it easier for patients to move around, and let staff work more safely and efficiently throughout the facility.

We supply and install automatic hospital doors, including sliding, swing, and touchless systems. Our engineers specialise in the exacting standards healthcare demands, ensuring every installation exceeds BS EN 16005 safety requirements, meets strict HTM 08-04 NHS guidelines, and delivers full accessibility compliance while maintaining the highest infection prevention standards.

Solutions for Every Part of the Hospital

Emergency and Main Entrances

Sliding doors are the best option for high-traffic hospital entrances. We install single, double, and telescopic systems with motion sensors that respond instantly and open wide enough to allow stretchers, wheelchairs, and trolleys to pass through safely. Breakout features can be included to provide a clear escape route in the event of a fire. All doors can be integrated with existing access control and fire alarm systems.

Ward and Corridor Access

Automatic swing doors are ideal for internal zones such as wards and main corridors. These systems can be set up for sensor or push-pad activation, allowing for hands-free entry while maintaining privacy and safety. Doors can be linked to building management or nurse call systems where needed. Opening and closing speeds can be adjusted based on the location and use. All installations comply with HTM 08-04 guidance.

Theatres and Clean Zones

In surgical areas and other sterile environments, surface contact must be minimised. We install touchless systems with foot pads, wave-to-open sensors, or elbow switches. These are paired with smooth, flush-fitted door surfaces that are easy to disinfect. Optional antimicrobial coatings are available. These systems support HBN 00-09 theatre design and NHS infection prevention protocols.

Secure and Mental Health Wards

Doors in high-risk areas need to manage movement without compromising safety. We supply reinforced sliding or swing doors that integrate with access control systems — including staff ID cards, fobs, or keypads. Doors can be programmed with time-based access permissions. For mental health settings, we can supply systems compatible with ligature-resistant hardware and local safeguarding requirements.

Designed for NHS Compliance

All hospital doors are installed in line with key safety and accessibility regulations:

  • BS EN 16005 – covers sensor range, obstacle detection, closing force, and safety signage
  • HTM 08-04 – provides safety, access, and fire guidance for hospital door specifications
  • Equality Act 2010 – ensures accessibility with the correct door width, activation method, and control positioning
  • NHS IPC guidance – recommends reduced surface contact to prevent the spread of infection
  • Health Building Notes (HBNs) – applied where doors serve specialist areas such as theatres or isolation rooms

Each installation includes a full compliance pack with commissioning results, configuration settings, access integration diagrams, and confirmation of fire alarm testing.

Installation with Minimal Disruption

All installations are carried out by DBS-checked, CSCS-accredited engineers. We have experience working across live hospital sites and coordinate closely with estates teams to avoid disrupting patient care.

Work is scheduled around shift changes, clinics, and ward routines. Clean, low-noise tools and dust control measures are used at all times. Temporary access routes are maintained during installation, and final systems are tested with your team and handed over fully commissioned.

Built for Clinical Use

Hospital doors need to perform reliably, day after day. We only install systems proven in clinical environments.

  • Motors and sensors built for high-frequency daily use
  • Surfaces and seals that withstand regular cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants
  • Adjustable settings to match staff workflows and safety requirements
  • Compatibility with fire panels, access control, and security systems
  • Suitable for both new-build and retrofit projects

Whether you’re upgrading part of a hospital or delivering a new facility, we’ll make sure your automatic doors are safe, compliant, and ready for long-term use.
