Automatic Swing Doors for Homes & Residential Adaptations
An automatic swing door is a standard hinged door fitted with a powered operator that opens and closes the leaf on its own — no manual pushing or pulling required. Residential adaptations are one of the largest parts of our business, and we install automatic swing doors for homes across Essex and Suffolk.
With nearly 20 years of experience, we have tested and developed systems that retrofit bespoke automation to existing doors, as well as supplying complete new installations.
Automated swing doors give convenient, effortless access — ideal for anyone who finds a standard door difficult to operate, and for busier entrances that need fast, hands-free entry and exit. Access Automation supplies automatic swing doors in a range of sizes and designs: a durable, low-maintenance solution for homes and other settings.
We offer specially designed UPVC, composite, timber and aluminium DDA-compliant doors that can incorporate automatic swing door opening systems. Installations are carried out by trained technicians, and ongoing maintenance and support packages keep your system running reliably after fit-out.
How does an automatic swing door work?
A swing door operator mounts above the door and drives the leaf open and closed through a motorised arm. It can be triggered hands-free by a sensor, or on demand by a push pad, remote transmitter or wall switch, then closes automatically after a set delay. The same operator can be fitted to a single or double door, and to most existing frames — which is why an automated swing door doesn’t always require a new door.

Automatic Swing Doors — FAQs
What is an automatic swing door?
An automatic swing door is a standard hinged door fitted with a powered operator that opens and closes the leaf automatically. It can be triggered hands-free by a sensor, or on demand by a push pad, remote or wall switch, then closes itself after a set time.
What is the difference between an automatic and an automated swing door?
There is no practical difference. “Automatic swing door” and “automated swing door” describe the same thing — a swing door fitted with a powered operator that opens and closes without manual effort. The terms are used interchangeably.
Are automatic swing doors suitable for homes?
Yes. They are widely used in domestic settings, particularly as residential adaptations for people with limited mobility. We supply DDA-compliant UPVC, composite, timber and aluminium doors with automation built in, sized and finished to suit the property.
Can an existing door be made automatic?
In most cases, yes. Our operators can be retrofitted to existing single or double doors, so a brand-new door isn’t always needed. A trained technician assesses the frame and leaf to confirm suitability before installation.
Are automatic swing doors safe?
Yes. Every system includes obstruction sensors, finger guards and an emergency stop button, and complies with BS EN 16005 — the safety standard for power-operated pedestrian doors. These features prevent entrapment and reduce the risk of injury.
How much does an automatic swing door cost?
Cost depends on the door material, whether it’s a single or double leaf, the operator and locking system specified, and whether it’s a retrofit to an existing door or a complete new installation. For a full breakdown, see our guide to automatic door costs, or contact us for a quote tailored to your property.
Do automatic swing doors need servicing?
Yes. Like any powered system, automatic swing doors should be serviced regularly to stay compliant and reliable. We offer maintenance and support packages alongside installation.
